Use: The Serum Copper is used to test for Wilson's disease. However, the test is used more frequently to monitor the nutritional supplementation of copper, especially when copper deficiency is indicated due to ongoing gastrointestinal losses. Copper is an important element in those whose metabolism is hampered in the genetic disease Wilsonâ€s. Excess copper gets stored in the body tissues causing damage to the nervous system, kidneys and eyes. It is strongly recommended that a serum ceruloplasmin test be obtained at the same time in order to associate the results with the proper clinical situation. Recommended For: Diagnosing and monitoring therapy for Wilson's disease, epilepsy work-up. Special Notes: Fasting for 12 hours is a must. Alcohol must be avoided for 24 hours prior to test.
