Use: This test is commonly performed to measure the strength of the immune system in an individual that has been diagnosed with HIV. Once you are diagnosed with HIV this test is performed to receive your baseline number. Then 2-8 weeks after treatment has begun it is performed every 3 months. CD4 or T-helper Cells is a type of white blood cell that fights infection. They move throughout the body helping to identify and fight off germs and bacteria that can cause infections.They are a major target of HIV which binds to the cells and then tries to kill them. The number of CD4 cells decrease as HIV advances. CD4 is the main receptor for HIV once it enters the cell. HIV binds to the surface of CD4 cell, it then enters the cell, and as CD4 tries to fight off infection and make more cells, it also makes more copies of HIV.
